About SCSMY

In year 2005, the founder of Society of Cosmetic Scientists of Malaysia (SCSMY), Mr. Teh Chee Kheng, a Cosmetic Science researcher in University Malaya, realized the importance of cosmetic science and he has taken the necessary initiative to recruit those who are qualified in this field to work together for achieving the mutual aims in cosmetic science.

In the year of 2006, SCSMY was successfully established and joined IFSCC as one of the member society.

The committee is facing the following challenges during their set up and operation:-

(i) cosmetic science is something “NEW” as none of the University / Institute provides any related course. In the mind of Malaysian, cosmetic science is limited to the field of colloid and surfactant only;

(ii) the amount of cosmetic scientist is small and some of them are lack of awareness in joining the society;

the reason as regards to why cosmetic science is “NEW” and the amount of cosmetic scientist is small is because prior to year 2003, cosmetic product in Malaysia was not governed by any legislation and the product can be manufactured, imported and sold easily without special governing rules. The scientists, researchers and manufacturers are not keen in doing research and development in cosmetic science as anyone is able to produce cosmetic regardless of the standard and quality of the product.

However, after the year 2003, the cosmetic products were governed by Ministry of Health Malaysia. The restrictions imposed on pharmaceutical products were applied on the cosmetic products. All cosmetic products must be licensed before one can import, store and sell the products. The manufacturer must achieve the standard of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) before manufacturing the product.

The scientists, researchers and manufacturers start realizing the importance of research and development in cosmetic science after the year of 2008. Due to ASEAN harmonization, the rules and regulations governing the cosmetic products were changed with more requirements imposed. Safety and efficacy studies / reports are required to ensure the cosmetic products are safe and effective.

Thus, we deeply believe with our sincere aim in promoting advancement of the cosmetic science, we will grow and receive more support as the research and development in cosmetic science is getting more and more important in Malaysia.
